Bottles of homemade lemonade

Lemonade is always a popular picnic drink and homemade lemonade just has that special tangy taste that nothing else can replace. It really is bottled sunshine.

When you make it at home you can be sure it is made the favourite way for your particular family. It will be full of nutritious ingredients and packed with vitamin C.

Tips for Using Lemons

  • Mint is a traditional addition to a lemonade recipes. It adds to the clean, fresh taste.
  •  Freeze mint leaves in ice cubes made with your lemonade and add them to your drink. Add a bunch to the top of your jug with a slice of lemon for decoration.
  • Get extra juice from each lemon by rolling it between your two palms or on a bench top. You can also pop the lemon into the microwave for 15 seconds or so to soften the skin and release the juices.
  • If you have a lemon tree in your garden store the juice when the lemons are in season and you have a glut in your garden.
  • Freeze lemon juice in ice cube trays and then keep the cubes in plastic self-seal bags.
  • You can also grate the lemon zest and freeze it. Not only useful for drinks but for any cooking needs.
  • You can also freeze whole or sliced lemons to use later.
  • Add ice cubes made with lemon juice to your lemon drink. This prevents the drink  becoming diluted as the ice melts.

Homemade Lemonade Recipes

When you are making lemonade a good general rule is to add 2 lemons to every 4 cups of water. Taste your lemonade and adjust the water and sugar content to suit you. Add any extras bit by bit so that you are not adding too much of any one ingredient.

Old Fashioned Lemonade

A very easy traditional lemonade recipe

You will need

  • 5 lemons
  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 1 1/2 litres water

Juice and peel 5 lemons and cut them into slices. Place the rinds in a bowl with the sugar. Stand for about an hour until the sugar is  absorbed. Pour boiling water over the  rinds and sugar. Allow to cool for 20 minutes and then remove the rinds. Add the lemon juice to the sugar mixture. Stir well and bottle.

These ingredients are enough for 4 people so you may want to increase the quantites to make enough for everyone at your picnic.

A Family Favourite

This lemonade recipe made a favourite summer drink in our house when I was a kid. There were always sticky bottles in the fridge to make up a long summer drink.

You will need

  • 2 oranges
  • 2 lemons
  • 1oz tartaric acid
  • 1 litre boiling water
  • 2lbs sugar

Grate the skins of the fruit to make a zest. Squeeze the juice from all the fruit. Place the sugar in a large bowl and add the zest and juice. Add the tartaric acid. Pour the boiling water over the  mixture and stir well until all the sugar has melted. Leave the bowl covered overnight so all the flavours are absorbed. In the morning strain the mixture into clean bottles. It is a good idea to wipe the outside of the bottles after bottling as they can get pretty sticky.

Store the lemonade in the fridge.

To take this homemade lemonade on a picnic mix it with water to taste and pour into a screw-top bottle. Leave the bottle in the fridge until you are going to leave and then pack it in a cool box to keep it cold.

Homemade lemonade makes a good base for  other drinks. Try pink lemonade by adding strawberries, raspberries or watermelon. Ginger lemonade is another way to add extra punch to lemonade. Find recipes for other lemon drinks here.
